Medication Diary 2011 to 2017-SIBO, Psoriatic Arthritis and Menopause

My regularly updated medication diary from 2011 to 2017 with a brief narrative explaining why I stop and start the various supplements, hormones and medications I have tried. The big picture: chronic diarrhea led me to a gastrointestinal doctor that diagnosed SIBO in 2011. Antibiotics cleared up the SIBO but no one could address the underlying cause of the SIBO. In hindsight, it was the first indication that I was experiencing “leaky gut”. Probably from alcohol and gluten. In 2016 I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis and began experimenting with biologics. An especially significant part of this story is that I was also going through menopause. I hypothesize that estrogen is highly protective of disease progression in a woman’s body and the sudden and severe decrease that happens with menopause allows diseases to flourish. But there is almost no research on this important transition. I am documenting my experience in the hope that it will be used for research to help future generations.

To fully understand why I was taking each of these supplements you’ll want to review my post on the progression of my disease and the diet and elimination protocols I have tried.

  1. Your comment about estrogen resonated with me- you are the third person this month who has mentioned that connection with me. One lady told me her doctor from U Penn is the one who brought up the theory to her- hopefully there is more research being done on this and what can be done to prevent it.

      Psoriatica

My sister is 3 years younger than me and was taking birth control pills to control her early menopause symptoms. She had an uterine ablation years before and that turned out to create disabling cramping when her body went through its normal cycles each month so she had to do something to control her pain. She’s no far enough through menopause that they want her to stop the birth control pills (she’s at risk for cancer). She is now experiencing the exact same symptoms I experienced when I first went through menopause. Mostly intense joint pain in her wrists and even a bony growth on one of her wrists. I can’t believe it is 2023 and we don’t know understand the role of estrogen on health!
