Pros and cons of Calcium Supplements
Calcium supplements were pushed as I went through Menopause. Bone loss and the consequences of osteoporosis often make the headlines, but if you dig deeper there are also a lot of doctors cautioning us about calcium. My surgeon wanted me to take calcium supplements as part of my recovery from my two foot surgeries. That seemed reasonable. I have spent a significant amount of time this year growing new bones. But now, especially after reading The Magnesium Miracle by Carolyn Dean, I’m questioning whether I should continue. I wonder if the calcium is preventing my body from absorbing other nutrients (magnesium, zinc) that are more important to taming the inflammatory process of Psoriatic Arthritis? I wonder if the excess calcium is crystalizing in my body and making my joints hurt worse? There is some evidence that doctors and researchers are asking similar questions like those presented in this study. I’m tempted to stop the calcium, but I’m stopping hormones this fall. So My current plan is to take calcium for another few months while I transition off the hormones and then experiment with stopping the calcium. Do you know anything about the effects of calcium supplements on psoriatic arthritis?
